COP30 Meet
This month saw COP30 in Brazil. The COP meetings are the annual
"Conference of the Parties" meetings, hosted by the UN, to rally international agreement on reducing CO2 emissions, and reversing climate change. It is easy to be cynical about UN conferences, and often change seems much too slow for environmental protection. However, it does seem that there is some value in these meetings. COP30 resulted in significant commitments for agriculture, including over $9 billion pledged for regenerative landscapes and the launch of the RAIZ initiative to restore degraded farmland. Additionally, the Belém Declaration on Fertilisers was introduced to promote lower emissions and better soil stewardship in agricultural practices. A lot of nice statements and fine intentions. It is only when these platitudes are translated into action at the national and local level that we see real change, but international meetings can encourage some governments to take the issues more seriously.
