Transitioning to Winter
This week we have been getting some of a last storage crops out of the ground:
black radish, turnips and the last of the carrots to come out. We still have a lot of green crops outside and in the tunnels (lettuce, sugarloaf, rukkola/rocket, spring onions, oriental mix, various mustard, chinese cabbage, etc. See link to webshop selection) - so we have a good range available. It is a bit risky at this time of year with the outdoor crops - as the night frosts are getting more severe, there is always a chance some of our crops will get wiped out, but it is worth the risk, as if we are lucky (which we often are) we are able to extend the season of a good selection of green leafy veg right up to Chrismas. Yesterday evening in anticipation of a tougher frost, we covered basically all of the outdoor crops with "floating fleece" (fátyolfólia), which unfortunately is made from an artificial polymer - basically plastic (polypropylene). We usually get two or three seasons out of the fleece, and it is very useful for protecting crops, but unfortunately one of those compromises taken to extend the season, and keep a wider selection of crops.
