Regi and Rains
We are at the beginning of our intensive irrigation season. We have spent some time over the last year thinking about how to develop...
Zsámboki Biokert to be more water efficient and still maintain optimum crops. Water is a complex issue, and it is certain that its increasing scarcity is going to make it a pressing issue in the years to come - so watch this space. From my own experience, the climate in Zsámbok is getting drier - every year is different, but there is definitely a trend towards hotter, drier summers here. What we really need is a national water strategy, tied in with a Europe wide strategy, to turn around to create the conditions for more rain. Tree and bush cover is diminishing. As a single, small farm there are only small steps we can take ourselves - we are trying to plant more trees and bushes over time. We can take action to reduce our use of irrigation water - one of the most important steps in this is to build organic matter (carbon) levels in the soil, to create a "soil sponge" (through composting,, green manuring, light cultivations), so that when it does rain we make the very most of the rain that does fall, by capturing it in our soils. Beyond this we are slowly swithing over to more use of drip irrigation, which uses less water than overhead sprinkler systems.
Ever thought of living in the Buda Hills? Our good friends, Marteen and Mira have spent 30 happy years in this Kakkuhegy house. They need to move for health reasons - so now the someone else can enjoy the house. If you are interested please view the house details at:
