Úgy tűnik, mintha már hetek óta ködös és vizes lenne a kert, valójában csak 10 napja van így, de nagyon esős az idő. Nagy kihívás volt ez számunkra, mivel a vizes talaj miatt megállt a késő őszi szabadföldi munka. Így energiáinkat a fóliasátrakra fókuszáltunk, kapálás és gyomlálás szabad kézzel is. A munka benn nagyjából kész is van. Most az a feladatunk, hogy kitaláljuk, hogyan készítsük elő a szabadföldi ágyásokat, hogy minél korábban kezdhessük a munkát tavasszal. Legtöbbször elő tudjuk készíteni az ágyásokat a tél beállta előtt, de amikor a talaj túl vizes, az előkészítés csak kárt okoz. Most komposztot szórunk a tetejére és letakarjuk azt. Így reméljük, hogy a giliszták és a talaj mikroorganizmusai bedolgozzák a komposztot a talajba, és a takarás annyi fényt elvesz, hogy a gyomnövények nem tudnak kifejlődni. Ez egyelőre egy próbamenet - minden év más és más. Pár éve bevezettük az állandó ágyások rendszerét a téli szántás helyett - még mindig tanuljuk, hogyan dolgozzunk az új rendszerrel, amelynek amúgy rengeteg jótékony hatása van a talajra nézve.
It seems like it has been damp and foggy in the garden for weeks, but it is probably only 10 days, but this followed a very wet period. This has been a little challenging for us, as the wet condition of the soil has held up the autumn cultivations outside. We have made good use of the time to concentrate on getting the polytunnels hoed and weed free with a lot of handweeding. This work is more or less finished. Now we have to decide how we are going to prepare our beds outside ready for an early start in the Spring. Most years we are able to cultivate the beds before "putting them to bed" for winter, but when the soil is too wet, any cultivation does more harm than good. We are experimenting with first spreading compost over the beds and then covering them with silage tarps. The hope being that the worms and microorganisms will work through the beds, incorporating the compost over the winter, and the tarps will exclude the light enough that any weeds die off. This is a trial - every season is different. A couple of years ago we introduced permanent beds with permanent pathways, rather than winter ploughing - we are still learning the best way to manage this permanent bed system, which has many soil health benefits.
