Perhaps our most iconic colleague at Zsámboki Biokert is Sári, our little sung heroine, who has been with us more or less from the start. We are not exactly sure how old she is, but at least 25yrs - probably more. She is a loyal and steady worker, and although slowly ageing, she is still able to put in a good days work. Why do we keep a workhorse, when surely it can't be economic? - you may ask.
There are several reasons - the first being that we just enjoy being in her company. We can't do all of our field work with Sári, but she is great at certain jobs: like cultivating the potatoes, working green manure into the soil and moving compost and all kinds of other things around the farm. Sári is an old favourite for any visitors - especially those who have been given a horse and cart tour around and about our farm.
Of course it is a great advantage to be able to feed Sári from the farm, and be less dependent on fossil fuels, and instead of exhaust fumes, she gives us valuable stable manure.
Last week we visited Krishna Völgy, and had a full tour around with Bálamodaka Dasa. It is always really interesting to see the developments at Krishna Völgy, where they really take investing in sustainability seriously. The gardens are very extensive, with large, modern polytunnels, and fantastic soil health techniques (green manuring and very high quality compost) Their area of production is increasing, and the whole gardens are very well planned and well organised.
